Emanuel Lasker Letter Emanuel Lasker (world champion 1894-1921) is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. In the following letter, he writes to one of the most active chess promoters of the day, Philadelphia's Walter Penn Shipley. Note that this was written just a few months before Lasker's historic match with Carl Schlechter. It is available for purchase: See Item #37 in the Russell Collection. To: Walter Penn Shipley From: Emanuel Lasker Date: November 29, 1909, Berlin Dear Mr. Shipley: With same mail I am sending another letter to you, an official letter, which I should like you to publish in full. You have written a kind letter and it is with pleasure that I accept your gift - I cannot call it otherwise - of your subscription to the St. Petersburg tourney book. The book is being printed in New York under supervision of Mr. Northrop. Your republishing matter of the Eve Post is, of course, most welcome. The variation of the French Defense where White plays Kt-QKt5 is favourable for black, I believe. If Kt-QKt3, then P-QR3, P-KB3 and white gets into difficulties. Black must play boldly and will then fare well. The variation will be an interesting subject for analysis by trial for yourself and your friends. Sorry, that I have so little time for chess. I never get the chance for a skittle game. It is a long while since I wrote to you. It is not because I have forgotten Philadelphians. The fact is, I think the Franklin C.C. a very agreeable place. And some of its members are patterns for men who want to do their duty and make life an enjoyment for self and others. Not an easy task. Am arranging the match with Schlechter. It will probably begin in January + end in March. Afterwards am booked for South America. With kindest wishes Your friend Emanuel Lasker
