One of the most important winning methods when a pawn
is on the seventh rank is the Lucena Position. This refers to a
technique in which the side with the extra pawn can create a shelter
from rook checks by "building a bridge" along the fourth rank. Although
the idea is credited to Luis Ramirez de Lucena, the first mention of an
analogous position was made by Alessandro Salvio in 1634.
